Voting for the Chhattisgarh urban body elections began on Tuesday morning, with polling taking place across 10 municipal corporations, 49 municipal councils, and 114 Nagar panchayats in the state. The polls commenced at 8 am and will continue until 5 pm, with the results to be declared on February 15.
A total of 44.74 lakh eligible voters are registered, with 22.52 lakh male voters and 22.73 lakh female voters. The Election Commission has set up 597 polling stations across the state to facilitate voting.
In January, the Chhattisgarh Election Commission had announced that urban local body elections would be held on February 11, with results expected on February 15. Additionally, the three-phase panchayat elections will take place on February 17, 20, and 23, with results to be announced on February 18, 21, and 24, respectively.
Ahead of the urban body polls, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai participated in the Vijay Sankalp rally in Korba on February 6, as part of the BJP’s campaign. He also held a roadshow in Raigarh to showcase the party’s support base in the region. During these events, Sai urged citizens to place their trust in the BJP for further development and governance. “I am grateful for the love you have shown to the BJP… Let us handle the responsibility of development. The double-engine government has been formed. Now, let’s form a triple-engine government,” he said, reiterating his commitment to progress.
In Raipur, CM Sai outlined the BJP’s strategy for the elections, stating that the party’s campaign for municipal elections had officially begun. He mentioned that a meeting would be held in the East Municipal Corporation, followed by a roadshow in the Raigarh Municipal Corporation in the evening.
Chhattisgarh’s Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao expressed confidence in the BJP’s success, stating that the party is well-prepared for the elections and would hold workers’ conferences across urban bodies to energize party members. “The lotus will bloom in these urban body elections, BJP will win,” he declared.
Sao also addressed the upcoming Chhattisgarh Mayoral polls, noting that BJP workers would raise the party flag at their homes on February 1 as part of the campaign. He criticized the Congress party, pointing to internal chaos and difficulties in selecting candidates. “The way Congress is struggling to find candidates shows they’ve already accepted defeat. Effigies of the Congress state president have been burned in several places, signaling dissatisfaction. BJP is poised for victory,” Sao added.
